Experience a Day of Culture, Connection, and Sacred Land 

Join us for a  journey through Ho-Chunk history and heritage. From sacred sites to traditional foods and stories passed down through generations, this tour invites you to see and experience the land through Indigenous eyes. Walk where ancestors walked, learn from cultural educators, and share a meal by the lake where stories still live

✨ What You’ll Experience: 

Welcome 
Start the day with an introduction to Ho-Chunk culture and our connection to the land you’ll explore. 

Cultural Site Visits 
Travel by guided vehicle to several key locations: 

  • Historic Indian Agency House - Historic home built for Indian sub-agent John Kinzie and his wife Juliette in 1832 to fulfill the Treaty of 1829 between the United States Government and the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) tribe. 

  • Keramani Village Historic Site, a Ho-Chunk village that thrived near the Baraboo River, during the late 1700’s through the 1830s, under Chief Nąąga Keramąnį’s leadership.

  • Man Mound Historic Site, the only known effigy mound in the shape of a human figure.

  • Yellow Thunder Memorial, memorial site honoring Chief Yellow Thunder, a respected Ho-Chunk leader, who resisted removal from his homelands.

Traditional Lunch 
Enjoy a thoughtfully prepared meal featuring seasonal and Indigenous ingredients. Learn the stories behind the food and the importance of sustenance in Ho-Chunk tradition. 

Seasonal Offerings at Tee Wakacak (Devils Lake)

  • Kayak Journey
    Paddle along the shores of this sacred lake with a park naturalist who shares her knowledge of the beautiful natural and unique landscape. 

  • Snow Shoeing
    Explore the serene and hushed landscape of winter, as the repetitive motion becomes meditative, moving through the landscape near the lake.

  • Mound Tour
    Discover the history of this sacred landscape while learning the importance of effigy mounds to the first peoples of this land.

Dinner
Close the day with a shared meal. Reflect on the day’s experiences and celebrate a new understanding in a relaxed, welcoming setting.
